Sustainable Fish Sourcing
Our Commitment
At Birchwood Aquatic Centre, our commitment to sustainable fish sourcing extends across our tropical, marine, pond and coldwater livestock, ensuring every customer can buy with confidence. We believe that keeping tropical, marine and pond fish should go hand in hand with protecting the environments they come from.
We work closely with trusted suppliers who share our commitment to animal welfare, responsible collection practices and sustainable fishkeeping. Our aim is simple: to provide healthy, high-quality livestock while supporting the long-term future of the hobby and the natural ecosystems that make it possible.
Where Our Fish Come From
We source livestock from carefully selected UK wholesalers, including:
- Tropical Marine Centre (TMC)
- Neil Hardy Aquatica
These suppliers work with breeders, farms and collection networks around the world to ensure livestock is sourced responsibly and transported with welfare as a priority.
Supporting Captive-Bred Fish
Whenever possible, we support the use of captive-bred fish.
Captive breeding helps to:
- Reduce pressure on wild populations
- Provide fish that are already adapted to aquarium life
- Improve availability of many popular species
- Support advances in breeding and conservation
Many of the freshwater species commonly available today are now bred in captivity rather than collected from the wild. Captive breeding continues to play an increasingly important role in the future of fishkeeping.
Responsible Wild Collection
Not all fish can currently be bred commercially.
For some species, particularly certain marine fish and specialist freshwater species, carefully managed wild collection remains an important part of the aquarium trade.
When conducted responsibly, sustainable collection can:
- Provide valuable income for local communities
- Create incentives to protect natural habitats
- Support conservation of aquatic ecosystems
- Encourage long-term stewardship of wild populations
Many collection programmes now focus on low-impact harvesting methods and sustainable quotas to help preserve fish populations for future generations.
Marine Sustainability
The marine aquarium trade has changed significantly over the past two decades.
Today, many suppliers actively support:
- Tank-bred marine fish
- Aquacultured corals
- Sustainable collection programmes
- Improved traceability within supply chains
- Higher welfare standards during transport
Tropical Marine Centre, one of our key suppliers, actively supports sustainable collection methods including fish ranching and post-larval collection programmes designed to reduce environmental impact while supporting local communities.
Animal Welfare First
The health and welfare of our livestock is always our highest priority.
Every fish entering Birchwood Aquatic Centre undergoes:
- Careful acclimation
- Observation and health checks
- Appropriate feeding and husbandry
- Professional advice before sale
Our experienced team works hard to ensure livestock is healthy, settled and ready for its new home before being offered for sale.
Protecting the Future of the Hobby
The aquarium hobby can play a positive role in conservation when managed responsibly.
Many fishkeepers develop a greater appreciation for aquatic environments through keeping fish, while responsible collection and breeding programmes help demonstrate the value of preserving rivers, lakes and coral reefs around the world.
By choosing trusted suppliers, supporting captive breeding and promoting responsible fishkeeping, we aim to contribute to a sustainable future for both the hobby and the habitats that inspire it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are your fish sustainably sourced?
Yes. We work with trusted suppliers who prioritise animal welfare, responsible collection methods and captive breeding programmes wherever possible.
Are your fish wild caught or captive bred?
Many of our freshwater species are captive bred. Some specialist freshwater and marine species may be responsibly sourced from the wild through established collection programmes.
Why are some fish still collected from the wild?
Some species cannot yet be commercially bred in sufficient numbers. Responsible collection programmes can support local communities and encourage habitat conservation when properly managed.
Where do you source your fish?
We work with established UK wholesalers including Tropical Marine Centre (TMC) and Neil Hardy Aquatica, both of whom supply livestock from carefully selected breeders and collection networks.
