Overview

The Neon Green Rasbora, now classified as Microdevario kubotai, is a tiny shoaler whose body glows an unusual luminous lime green under good lighting. It comes from clear, well-oxygenated headwater streams of western Thailand and neighbouring Myanmar. It suits mature, planted nano tanks and peaceful communities of small fish.

  • Adult Size: Around 2 cm (0.8 in)
  • Lifespan: 3–5 years

Origin

  • Native to: Ranong and Phang Nga, Thailand; Ataran basin, Myanmar
  • Habitat: Clear, oxygen-rich forest streams with sand and leaf litter

Feeding

  • Diet: Omnivorous micropredator
  • Preferred Foods: Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, microworms, micro granules, crushed flake
  • Feeding Habits: Small feeds twice daily; vary live and dried

Tank Mates

  • Best with: Other small rasboras, ember tetras, pygmy corydoras, dwarf shrimp
  • Avoid: Larger or boisterous fish that outcompete them

Aggression & Behaviour

  • Temperament: Very peaceful
  • Territoriality: None; a true schooling species

Experience Level

  • Difficulty: Beginner to intermediate
  • Challenges: Needs a mature tank with stable, clean water

Water Parameters

  • Water Type: Freshwater, soft and slightly acidic
  • Temperature: 20–27°C (68–81°F)
  • pH: 6.0–7.0
  • Hardness: 1–10 dGH
  • Flow: Slow to moderate
  • Tank Size: Minimum 60 litres for a group of 8–10 or more

Final Notes

These fish school naturally in groups of twenty or more, so the bigger the shoal the bolder and greener they become. Add only to a fully cycled tank and keep temperatures on the cooler side. Egg-scatterers with no parental care; females are deeper-bodied and larger, males more compact and intensely coloured. Over dark substrate the green is unlike anything else in the hobby.
