Overview
The Dwarf Spotted Rasbora is a tiny nano shoaler with a pink-red body and a bold black spot on each flank plus smaller spots at the fin bases. It comes from blackwater peat-swamp streams of Peninsular Malaysia, southern Thailand, Sumatra and Singapore. It suits mature, softwater nano and shrimp tanks.
- Adult Size: Around 2.5 cm (1 in)
- Lifespan: 4–8 years
Origin
- Native to: Peninsular Malaysia, southern Thailand, Sumatra, Singapore
- Habitat: Dim, acidic blackwater streams with leaf litter
Feeding
- Diet: Omnivorous micropredator
- Preferred Foods: Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, microworms, crushed flake, micro pellets
- Feeding Habits: Small feeds twice daily; do not rely on dried food
Tank Mates
- Best with: Other Boraras, ember tetras, pygmy corydoras, kuhli loaches, dwarf shrimp
- Avoid: Anything large enough to eat them; boisterous fish
Aggression & Behaviour
- Temperament: Very peaceful and timid
- Territoriality: None; males spar harmlessly
Experience Level
- Difficulty: Intermediate
- Challenges: Needs very soft acidic water, stability and micro foods
Water Parameters
- Water Type: Freshwater, very soft and acidic
- Temperature: 20–28°C (68–82°F)
- pH: 4.0–6.5
- Hardness: 1–5 dGH
- Flow: Slow
- Tank Size: Minimum 40 litres for a group of 8–10 or more
Final Notes
Best colour and confidence come from a group of ten or more over dark substrate with leaf litter, gentle sponge filtration and dim, planted cover. Very soft, acidic water and a fully mature tank matter more than anything else. Continuous egg-scatterers with no parental care; females are rounder and larger than males. In a blackwater nano setup they are captivating.
