Overview
The Green Banded Severum is the natural wild-type form of this popular cichlid, with an olive-green, disc-shaped body crossed by dark vertical bars that are strongest in juveniles. It is a gentle, intelligent fish that quickly learns to greet its keeper at the glass. Native to the Amazon basin of Brazil and Peru, it suits keepers of larger, peaceful South American communities.
- Adult Size: Around 20–25 cm (8–10 in); up to 30 cm possible, males larger

Final Notes
This is a fast-growing fish that needs a spacious, well-filtered aquarium long before it reaches adult size, so plan for the full-grown fish now. Furnish with sand, bogwood, rocky caves and tough plants such as Anubias, because soft-leaved plants will be eaten. Males show reticulated cheek markings and longer fins; pairs clean a flat stone, lay several hundred eggs and guard the fry for weeks. A confident, rewarding centrepiece.
