Overview

The Golden Harlequin is a selectively bred colour form of the classic Harlequin Rasbora, with a warm gold body and the familiar black triangular wedge softened to smoky bronze. The wild species comes from gently flowing forest streams of Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Sumatra and Borneo. It suits any peaceful planted community.

  • Adult Size: Around 4.5–5 cm (2 in)
  • Lifespan: 5–8 years

Origin

  • Native to: Peninsular Malaysia, southern Thailand, Singapore, Sumatra, Borneo
  • Habitat: Slow, tannin-stained forest streams with Cryptocoryne

Feeding

  • Diet: Omnivorous micropredator
  • Preferred Foods: Flake, micro granules, daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm
  • Feeding Habits: Once or twice daily; vary live, frozen and dried

Tank Mates

  • Best with: Tetras, other rasboras, corydoras, small loaches, dwarf gouramis
  • Avoid: Fin nippers and large predatory fish

Aggression & Behaviour

  • Temperament: Very peaceful
  • Territoriality: None; a tight shoaling species

Experience Level

  • Difficulty: Beginner
  • Challenges: Needs a group of 8–10 to show natural behaviour

Water Parameters

  • Water Type: Freshwater, soft and slightly acidic
  • Temperature: 21–28°C (70–82°F)
  • pH: 5.0–7.5
  • Hardness: 1–12 dGH
  • Flow: Slow to moderate
  • Tank Size: Minimum 60 litres for a group of 8–10

Final Notes

A hardy, undemanding shoaler that simply needs company, stable water and planting to look its best; a lone or small group stays pale and nervous. Unusually for a rasbora, spawning pairs attach eggs to the underside of broad leaves. Males are slimmer and more intensely coloured, females rounder in the belly. Alongside standard Harlequins the gold form makes a lovely mixed shoal.
