Overview

The Gold Ram is a captive-bred colour form of the Ram Cichlid with a buttery yellow body, blue-flecked fins and a soft peach flush. It is a small, gentle dwarf cichlid from the Orinoco llanos of Venezuela and Colombia that sifts sand for food. It suits a warm, softwater community with calm tank mates.

  • Adult Size: Around 5–6 cm (2–2.5 in); males slightly larger
  • Lifespan: 2–4 years

Origin

  • Native to: Orinoco basin, Venezuela and Colombia
  • Habitat: Warm, shaded savannah pools and streams with leaf litter

Feeding

  • Diet: Omnivorous, sifts substrate for food
  • Preferred Foods: Bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp, sinking granules, micro pellets
  • Feeding Habits: Small feeds twice daily; sinking foods reach them

Tank Mates

  • Best with: Small tetras, pencilfish, corydoras, otocinclus
  • Avoid: Boisterous or nippy fish, larger cichlids

Aggression & Behaviour

  • Temperament: Peaceful and shy
  • Territoriality: Pairs defend a small spawning patch

Experience Level

  • Difficulty: Intermediate
  • Challenges: Needs warm, very clean, stable water; poor competitor for food

Water Parameters

  • Water Type: Freshwater, soft and acidic
  • Temperature: 26–30°C (79–86°F)
  • pH: 5.0–7.0
  • Hardness: 1–10 dGH
  • Flow: Slow
  • Tank Size: Minimum 60 litres for a pair; add dither fish in larger tanks

Final Notes

Rams are short-lived and unforgiving of cool or neglected water, so a mature tank, frequent small water changes and warmth are the real commitment. Use fine sand, dim lighting and floating plants to reduce timidity. Pairs are substrate spawners that guard eggs on flat stones; males are larger with a longer dorsal spine, females show a rosy belly. Settled, well-fed Gold Rams glow beautifully over dark substrate.
